第五章 师父的谜语
The Monkey King became a disciple of the Subodhi and named Sun Wukong, he felt happy and grateful.
猴王被菩提祖师收为徒弟，又起名为孙悟空，他心中既欢喜又感激。
But as a fresh bird, would Sun Wukong get top magic skills quickly? The answer is NO.
但是，作为一个新人，孙悟空能很快学到高超的法术吗? 答案是否定的。
First he had to learn basic living skills, such as cooking, washing, woodcutting and sweeping…
首先，他要学的是基础生活技能，例如煮饭、洗衣、砍柴、扫地…
He took classes and learned etiquette with senior brothers every day, and took care of the garden in the spare time, growing flowers or weeding. He lived like this for six or seven years.
每天，孙悟空与众师兄学习言语礼貌，讲经论道，闲暇时间就养花，锄草，打理花园。如此过了六七年。
One day the Subodhi was going to do a lecture, and many immortals gathered to study.
有一天，菩提祖师登坛讲学，众仙云集，都来听祖师讲解大道。
The Subodhi was highly powerful and proficient in all schools of thought. He integrated Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism seamlessly when teaching, which was very wonderful.
菩提祖师法力高强，精通诸子百家，讲起课来能将佛道儒三教融合，无缝衔接，十分精妙。
Sun Wukong listened and thought he understood its profound meaning. He was overjoyed, jumped up and down.
孙悟空在一旁听见了，并且他认为自己理解其深刻的含义，于是他欣喜若狂，高兴得上蹿下跳。
"Why are you crazy in the class and not listen to me?" When the Master saw this, he stopped him.
祖师看见了，便叫住孙悟空道：你在班中怎么癫狂跃舞，不听我讲？
Sun Wukong explained that he was too happy to hear the lecture, it was so wonderful.
孙悟空解释说，他听师父讲到精妙之处太高兴了，喜不自胜。
The Master saw him so smart to understand the essence of the lecture, then asked how long he had been here and what he would like to learn.
祖师见他识得妙音，猜想是有几分灵根，便又问来了多久了，想学什么？
Sun Wukong didnt know the season, but remembered that he had peaches in the back mountain for seven times.
孙悟空也不识得时节，只记得后山的桃子已经吃过七次。
Seven years, then. The Master advised Sun Wukong to learn "crafts", such as witchcraft and medicine, but Wukong shook his head and said, "No! I dont learn!"
那么便是七年了。祖师建议孙悟空学习术，例如巫术和医学，谁知道悟空摇摇头，说：不学！不学！
Then the master advised Sun Wukong to learn "scholarships", such as Confucianism, Taoism and Sophists. But Sun Wukong shook his head again and said, "No! I dont learn!"
祖师又建议孙悟空学习流，例如儒家，道家，诡辩家等思想流派。谁知道悟空又摇摇头，说：不学！不学！
After a few more suggestions, and Sun Wukong still would not like to learn, the Master was fed up.
师父又给了几次建议，孙悟空还是不学，师父忽然生气了。
"You such a monkey, dont learn this, dont learn that, what on earth to learn?"
你这猢狲，这般不学，那般不学，到底要怎么样？
The Master walked down from the stage, and hit Sun Wukong with his rod three times on the head. Then he left the classroom holding the rod behind his back.
师父跳下高台，用戒尺在孙悟空头上打了三下，然后背着手，从后门离开了教室。
The class were frightened and all complained, "You crazy monkey! How rude! The Master teaches you, instead of learning, you talked back and angered him! We dont know when he will come out!"
吓得班上听讲的人都抱怨悟空说：你这泼猴！怎么没有礼貌！师父传你道法，不学就算了，还与师父顶嘴，这番冲撞了他，也不知道什么时候才出来！
Sun Wukong was not angry at this moment, on the contrary he put a smile on his face. Because he has understood the secret plan, the Master wasnt angry but playing riddles, to teach him secret skills!
孙悟空这会儿也不恼，满脸陪着笑，原来他心中已经暗暗盘算，师父这是在打谜语，要传他秘法呢！
At midnight, Sun Wukong slipped through the back door to the Masters house. Sure enough, the door was open and the Master was sleeping. He just knelt down in front of the bed so as not to disturb the Master.
当晚三更时分，孙悟空从后门跑到师父的住处。果然，门开着，师父正在睡觉，孙悟空也不敢惊扰了他，便跪在榻前。
After a while, the Master woke up and scolded him: "Monkey, why you are not sleeping in your room at night, but come here to me?"
不一会儿，师父醒来，训斥道：你这猢狲，三更半夜不在自己房里睡觉，却跑到我这里来做甚？
Sun Wukong replied, "Yesterday you hit me three times, and held your rod behind your back, so I knew you wanted me to come at midnight and enter through the backdoor, to teach me the real thing!"
孙悟空憨笑说:师父昨天打了我三下，又把戒尺藏在背后，是想让我三更从后门进来，传我真本事！
Hearing this, the Master was impressed and thought to himself, the monkey really was born from heaven and earth, otherwise how could he break my secret riddle?
师父听了，十分欢喜，暗自寻思，这厮果然是个天地生成的，不然怎能打破我盘中之暗谜？
Sun Wukong said sincerely, "Your master, as there is no one else here, could you please show your mercy and teach me the way of immortality? I will never ever forget your kindness!"
孙悟空恳求说，此时没有别人，望师父大发慈悲，传我长生之道，弟子永不忘恩！
"Well, well." The master nodded and said, "Since you broke the riddle, Im glad and its also the fate, then Ill teach you the way of immortality."
好吧。师父点点头，说：既然你打破了暗迷，算是有缘，我亦心中喜悦，便传你长生之妙法。
As it is:
Seeking immortality is difficult. Dont mistake a genius for ordinary.
Only when you meet the one can you teach the method. Otherwise, even if you explain all the great truths, they will never understand.
正是：
难！难！难！道最玄，莫把金丹作等闲。不遇至人传妙诀，空言口困舌头干。
